Post Office and Shop Manager

Ideally full time –37.5 hours per week; however, we are happy to discuss flexibility with the successful candidate.

Heptonstall Post Office and shop is currently used by the 1500 residents of the civil parish of Heptonstall in Calderdale, West Yorkshire and the adjacent hilltop parishes. It is a designated “community status” Post Office as part of a government programme to recognise these “last shop in the village” branches. Heptonstall Community Assets Ltd is in the process of purchasing the shop and Post Office to maintain a vital, well used and important part of our village community. Many of our residents are elderly and rely on the Post Office and shop for their grocery shopping and for the important social role that it plays in their lives.

We require that the ideal candidate is someone who is organised and has the experience of managing a small team, including volunteers. Applicants will need to show that they are aware of the needs of our local community, and in particular, the new venture of this community asset buy out.

The Manager will be a key member of the business. This is an exciting and challenging role. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, allowing for effective communication both internally with customers, staff, volunteers and the Board as well as suppliers. The person we are looking for will be enthusiastic and motivated with high levels of integrity as well as experience of working/living in a rural environment.

The main hours of work for the Manager will be in line with Post Office opening hours, including Saturday mornings and there is likely to be a requirement to work flexibly.

Initial salary offered is around £20,000 at the outset. There is an intention to offer a profit-based bonus scheme within 12 months, based on an increase in net revenue.

The successful applicant will be auto enrolled into a national pension scheme, and annual leave will be 5.6 weeks (inclusive of bank holidays worked).

Car and travel payments will be available in line with our policy.

Training will be available and will entail an initial 3 week intensive training with the Post Office, with ongoing support and hands on training for a period of 3 months.
